Gold

This drawing is the beginning of my collaboration with the journalist Manuel Calloquispe-Flores- which so far involves an on-going text-chain and shared images. Here, I investigate what is essentially the rape of the Amazon due to global greed and demand for gold. I am interested in the illegal gold mines of the Madre de Dios region of Peru and the miners who are daily risking their lives and being exploited for their cheap labour. Gold 1 is the beginning of my research. It is a drawing based on one corner of a photo taken by Manuel and sent to me. It depicts alpaca on a hillside abutting a highway. In the photo, Manuel holds a toddler who begs each day for alms by the side of the road. I used white chalk against black paper to suggest something skeletal, evocative of images of deforestation in South America.
